I got a chance to catch up with Nathan Bond of Band Marino to exchange a few words of wisdom. Some of the questions I just like to have fun with, so they might seem lame. In my opinion, the “lamer” the question the more you can discover ones true personality.
So here we go,
As an aspiring artist, how do you feel your music is original and exciting?
I s’pose a big part of what makes us what we are is our constant drive to learn more about music and how it is made in different venues, eras, and parts of the world As a result our influences are
always evolving, changing, and growing, and in the process we are too. I think it’s important for an artist to know that no matter how experienced and skilled he is, he will always be a student of his art. You can always learn from something, anywhere at any time. There is a pretty broad range in what we do, and we most certainly like to fuse different elements together in somewhat unconventional ways. I think this outlook is an important facet of that.
If you had a 5-disc Cd player in front of you, what 5 CD’s would you put in to play?
That question could be different at any moment. At this moment I would go with:
Of Montreal: The Sunlandic Twins
Hackensaw Boys: Keep it Simple
Beck: Guero
The Byrds: Sweetheart of the Rodeo
The Books: Thought for Food
What is your goal as a musician and where do you see yourself in 5 years?
My goal as a musician is to make better music, and make the best music I can make. Hopefully to the point of affecting someone and giving them something. In five years I hope to be playing as much music as possible, seeing the world, and jotting down notes outside a village in Ireland.
If yellow was a sound, what would it sound like?
Yellow is my favorite color, so it would have to be something pretty amazing. Maybe it would be Fats Waller…actually, he’s
brown…Ennio Morricone? I could see that.
If you were writing your own interview, what is one question you would want to be asked? Please answer your question as well.
Q: After consuming a trully heroic amount of magic dust you find yourself in a vicious guitar duel with a
level 7 guitar wizard accompanied by a gold paladin on drums. knowing full well this wizard has a powerful arthritis spell at his disposal do you risk the duel or regroup your forces employing an army of black dragons to accompany you on bass and keyboards?
A: I’m not sure I understand the question, but I would have to say in this business its important not to let your own pride get the better of you. No matter how good you are there will always be a wizard, sorcerer, or magical sultan that can out play you.
All questions were answered by Nathan Bond of Band Marino, except the last question which was answered by Jonathan Nee; who is no doubt a dungeons and dragons fan (though I’m only speculating, possibly Final Fantasy?) All kidding aside, being a musician myself, he makes a very strong point.
Be sure to check out Band Marino’s album review as well, or, after hearing the above song sarinate you through reading this interview you can just go straight to ordering the album. (Yes I know you could just download it for free or burn it off your friend, but have you seen the album art work on this bitch?
